After reviewing hundreds of Australian Meta Ads accounts, we’ve identified a consistent set of mistakes that cause most campaigns to underperform. If you’re running Facebook or Instagram ads and not seeing the ROAS you expected, chances are you’re making at least 3 of the 10 mistakes below.
Mistake 1: Sending Traffic to Your Homepage
Your homepage is designed for multiple audiences with multiple objectives. A Meta Ad should send traffic to a dedicated landing page with a single CTA matching your ad’s promise. Switching from homepage to dedicated landing page typically improves conversion rates by 3–8×.
Mistake 2: Killing Campaigns Too Early
Meta’s algorithm needs 50+ conversion events per week to optimise effectively. Most Australian businesses pull the plug after 7–14 days and $300 of spend when they haven’t seen results — but they’ve barely given the algorithm time to learn. Allow a minimum 4-week learning period before making major changes.
Mistake 3: Too Many Interests in a Single Ad Set
Stacking 15 interests into a single ad set prevents the algorithm from learning which interests actually convert. Keep audiences focused: 1–3 closely related interests per ad set, with separate ad sets for different audience segments.
Mistake 4: Using Only Broad Match Creative
Static images alone rarely cut through the scroll in 2026. Australian audiences respond significantly better to:
- Short-form video (8–15 seconds)
- User-generated content (UGC) style
- Carousel ads showing multiple products or proof points
- Video testimonials from real customers
Mistake 5: Ignoring the Meta Pixel and Conversions API
iOS 17+ and privacy changes have significantly reduced Meta’s ability to track conversions via the pixel alone. If you haven’t implemented Conversions API (server-side tracking), you’re likely missing 30–50% of your actual conversions, causing the algorithm to underspend on your best audiences.
Mistake 6: No Retargeting Campaigns
Only 2–3% of website visitors convert on their first visit. Without retargeting campaigns re-engaging the 97–98% who didn’t convert, you’re leaving most of your ad spend on the table. A basic 30-day retargeting campaign typically achieves 3–5× better ROAS than cold traffic campaigns.
Mistake 7: Testing Too Many Variables at Once
If you change your audience, creative, offer and landing page simultaneously, you have no idea what drove the performance change. Test one variable at a time, with enough budget to reach statistical significance (typically 1,000+ impressions per variant).
Mistake 8: Not Running Advantage+ Shopping (for eCommerce)
Meta’s Advantage+ Shopping Campaigns have dramatically outperformed traditional manual setups for most eCommerce advertisers since 2024. If you’re running a WooCommerce or Shopify store, this should be your first test.
Mistake 9: Ignoring Frequency
A frequency of 5–7+ means your audience has seen the same ad 5–7 times. Ad fatigue is real — when frequency climbs, CTR drops and CPM rises. Refresh your creative every 3–4 weeks or when frequency exceeds 3.0 for your audience size.
Mistake 10: No Attribution Window Configuration
Most Australian businesses don’t adjust their attribution window, leaving it at the default 7-day click, 1-day view. For high-consideration purchases (furniture, cars, professional services), a 28-day click window is more accurate. Configure your attribution to match your actual sales cycle.
